The Study on the Temple-court of Taiwanese Folk Belief----Application at Shye-Tian Temple and Tsyr-Tian Temple in Chiao-Hsi / 台灣民間信仰之寺廟廟埕空間之探討---以礁溪協天廟與慈天宮為例

碩士 / 國立臺灣大學 / 園藝研究所 / 84 / The "temple-court" is an adjoining space of a temple, in Amoy and Taiwan,it is considered as a public ground that has become part of life of the local and hence is full of ethnic culture. In Taiwanese folk belief, a lot of important feast day activities and ceremonies were conducted in the temples. Moreover, the Taiwanese folk belief has a sort of "wide-spread" and "popular" teristic; hence the daily lives of the followers are very integrated, thus the temple-court has given rise to a lot of life''s functional forms such as social recreation , commerce, communication, politics , etc. The process of change in society, road expansion and temple building expansion had provided new and continuing recreation place and facilities. These not only ate into the temple-court''s area but also change the traditional functional forms of the temple-court. Therefore, in the face of changes in the social environment, the future development and utilization of the temple-court become a matter deserving attention , and this is the subject matter of this paper. The paper shall cover the views of the temple-court''s landscape, which shall include the background leading to the creation of temple-court; e.g. , special
characteristics of Taiwanese folk belief, physical attributes of temples, human activities , etc. , to illustrate for better understanding the role of temple-court in folk belief. Then,it is hope that under the general concept of purpose of the place, this paper can provide a direction for the consideration of future development and utilization of the temple-court.Hence, the views of the temple-court may be able to meet the demands of the activities conducted in the space; further, determine whether the characteristicical flavor and presentation of its purpose may become important factors to the creation of the purpose of the place. After discussing the documents, the paper infers several important factors which are necessary in temple-court''s development and utilization, such as the nature of the temple to which temple-court elongs( including temple''s location, temple-court''s scale, idols, religious organization ), demand of place( social or spiritual needs), regional cultural characteristics( historic buildings , custom activities ), principles of aesthetics( color, pattern, plant), and tendency of tourism. At the same time, to offer some references on temple-court''s development and utilization, the paper presents the use of temple-court''s space, and the principles of allocation of facilities about recreation and public service.Reviewing the documents cannot totally reflect the real problems the temple-court is facing. So, according to the research limits, two temple-courts that stand in urban and suburban area separately are chosen for practical analysis. In order to probe into some issue , such as the temple-court''s style and meaning conveyed by temple-court, the compatibility of activities held in the temple-court, the decoration of the temple-court, and the issues of tourism involved. In the end. the paper combines the find of issues and the inferences of documents, to present some principle suggestions.
