Study on the phytoplankton and its relationships with marine physico-chemical factors along the Kaoping Canyon southwest of Taiwan / 高屏峽谷浮游植物生物量與海水物化因子相關性之研究

碩士 / 國立臺灣大學 / 海洋研究所 / 85 / This study was carried out at 2 to 6 stations along the Kaoping
Canyonsouthwest of Taiwan during the periods of June and
December of 1995 andDecember of 1996. The standing crop(in cell
number) and species compositionwere determined microscopically,
while the size distribution pattern ofphytoplankton at various
depths was determined on the basis ofsize-fractionated
chlorophyll a. The variability of chlorophyll-biomass wasrelated
to some important physico-chemical factors, i.e. water
temperature,salinity, inorganic nutrients, particulate organic
nitrogen (PON) andparticulate organic carbon(POC). Besides,
comparison between the in situmeasurement of in vivo chlorophyll
fluorescence of the seawater andacetone-extracted chlorophyll a
concentration was also made in this study. The results showed
that phytoplankton density was higher in the mixed layerand
lower below the thermocline. Chlorophyll concentrations of
seawater inJune and December 1995 and December 1996 were
0.06~0.36 mg/m3, 0.02~0.29 mg/m3and 0.11~1.14 mg/m3,
respectively. There were significant correlations ofchlorophyll
a with water temperature or inorganic nutrients; chlorophyll
aconcentration increased exponentially with increasing water
temperature anddecreasing nutrients, particularly for
picoplankton. A linear correlationbetween chlorophyll a
concentration and POC value was also observed.Diatioms were the
major constituents of phytoplankton assmegalges andcontributed
64.3~98.7% of the total standing crop. Among them Chaetoceros,
Coscinodiscus, Diploneis, Nitzschia, Pleurosigma, Rhizosolenia,
Skeletonemaand Thalassiothrix were most common in the samples
observed. Otherphytoplankters, i.e. dinoflagellates, blue-green
algae and silicoflagellateswere present in fewer amounts.
Trichodesmium, a blue-green alga, generallyoccurred in the upper
water layer of less than 25m, contributiong 11.4% ofthe total
standing crop. According to the results of size-
fractionedchlorophyll analysis, both netplankton and
nanoplankton were dominant in thecanyon water in June 1995 and
December 1996, while the minute plankton, picoplankton, dominated
in December 1995. There was a linear relationshipbetween the
concentration of extracted chlorophyll a and the in
situfluorescence of the seawater with the equation ofChl.a(mg/
m3) = 0.377 x Fls - 0.0157, R2 = 0.66
