Optimization of avaition pilot scheduling / 民航駕駛員排班最佳化之研究

碩士 / 國立中央大學 / 土木工程學系 / 86 / The air transportation market in Taiwan has been growing
significantly. With the government policy of developing Taiwan
as the Asia air hub, the airline networks are expected to
enlarge in the near feature. Currently, the airlines not
only expend their fleet sizes to meet the demand but also try
to reduce their crew cost. In general, the crew cost for a major
airline accounts for 10%~15% of its total operation cost. Thus,
if the crew schedule for an airline can be optimized, then its
operation can be improved.
The study focuses on the pilot scheduling which is essential for
airline operations. Because a feasible pilot schedule has to
satisfy the drafted flight schedule, agreement with labor
unions, and government regulations, the pilot
scheduling is complicated. It is typically difficult to solve
efficiently by hand, particularly for large scale problems. For
these reasons, the study tries to develop a model and an
efficient solution algorithm to help carriers minimize pilot
cost and plan proper pilot pairing under the aforementioned
constrains.
The model is formulated as a set-partitioning problem. To solve
the problem efficiently, we propose a column generation
approach to solve for a major airline in Taiwan. The column
generation approach decomposes theproblem into two parts. The
master problem is a 0-1 integer-programming problem which is
solved using the simplex method after relaxing the integer
constrain. The sub-problem is formulated as a shortest path
problem which is slove using label correcting algorithm. The
master problem and the sub-problem are solved repeatedly until
the optimal solution is found. To show how well the model could
be applied to real world, a case study regarding the
internationaloperations of a major airline in Taiwan was
performed. The results were good.
