At the same time, the treatment procedure had been improved by the water company, and the police which life water had been separated from the industrial water had been done on Oct, 1994. Although tap water quality has obviously improved in Kaohsiung these recent years, there were only 48.6%, 23.3%, 33.3% people who used tap water as their drinking water from the studies by Dr. Hong, Y.J. in 1992 to 1994.
We analysed the differences between water plants and monitoring points from 1995 to 1998. Another hand we examined the acceptable materials from samples of Cherngching lake water supply system. Besides, we investigated 224 houses that live in Sanmin district and Kushan district to understand how many people can drink the tap water without boiling by questionnaires.
The results showed that the values of turbidity, residual chlorine, total hardness, TDS at monitoring points were lower than water plants, on the contrary chloride and trihalomethanes were higher. However the mean of all the materials were below the new criteria of drinking water standards. There were nothing different quality between indoor faucet and monitoring points, except residual chlorine higher at monitoring points. There were 42.4% residents accepted tap water for drinking water source, but 94.7% of them would like to use water cleaning system.
We sampling 50 houses from 224 questionnaires to examine microbial parameters, and trihalomethanes of tap water without boiling. The result showed that 14.0% of the faucet in the building in total bacterial count and 2% in total coliforms were over the new criteria of drinking water standards. Trihalomethanes were 41.08±14.52μg/L at the faucet and 1.52±3.75μg/L at boiling water. From these data, there would be some problems existed in building water supply system.
Thinking of the above results and 40.2% who take the water directly from the water supply system, 21.0% who reflect water pressure not enough, and only 46.6% who can drink tap water without boiling, the sudy showed the tap water could not be drinking water without boiling n Sanmin and Kushan district in Kaohsiung.
