碩士 / 國立中山大學 / 海洋資源學系 / 87 / There were 16 species of salps and 3 species of doliolids found in the three sampling areas, Liu-Chiu Yu Island, vicinity of Tainan and northeastern waters of Taiwan, during 1993~1997. Eight of these species: Thalia democratica, T. orientalis, T. rhomboides, Salpa cylindrica, Traustedtia multitenticulata, Cyclosalpa pinnata, Doliolum denticulatum and Dolilina m*lleri were found in all three areas. Shannon diversity indexes of the tunicates in our samples were between 1.7 and 2.0. Doliolum denticulatum was the most abundant thaliacean species in all studied sites, accounted for more than 50% by number in the total catches. However, different areas were dominated by different salp species.
In the seasonal multiple net samplings, Doliolum denticulatum and Thalia democratica exhibited alternation of sexual and asexual reproductions during different seasons of the year. Different stages of some salps and doliolids also showed preference to different depths of the water column, suggesting that the vertical distribution of these species might be reproduction related. Most species, however, did not show a clear day/night vertical migration in this study. The abundance of different stages of D. denticulatum was found to be correlated with hydrological conditions. The total abundance of the Thaliacea in surface water displayed a significant difference between day and night in October but not in March.
Spatial distributions of the Thaliacea in the transect west of Tainan showed that these animals in the surface tows and deep oblique tows belonged to two different communities. Night tows were more abundant than day tows; but difference between stations were not significant. The Thaliacea in the waters northeast of Taiwan, on the other hand, showed greater variability in abundance among stations.
