Study on Fatigue Strength of Double Hull VLCC / 雙層船殼超大型油輪之疲勞強度分析

Oil tankers are the most appropriate transportation on earth, especially in those nations and areas that need mass oil but lack of it. In order to adapt to the demand of environmental protection, the Double Hull Tankers recently became more and more strict design.
In recent years, the events of damage in tanker structures happened frequently. From the data of investigation, it reveals that after long-term use the ship structures cannot bear the alteration load, for example, wave load, it may cause the phenomenon of fatigue, cracks, and the damage of ship structures. In traditional ship structural design, it proceeds the simple static analysis by giving the loads from rules. The behavior of fatigue from long-term, alteration loads is not considered further, so the damage of members become the most series problem with the increasing age of ships.
In this paper, we investigates on a 280,000 DWT Double Hull VLCC by using the software of Safehull provided by ABS to analysis the strength of the ship structures. By this, we can understand the characteristics in structures of Double Hull VLCC. Then, to check the fatigue strength, we establish a simplified analysis system, which includes seakeeping analysis, finite element analysis, the long-term stress of distribution and the predict of fatigue life, and combines them to a whole analysis system, according to the spirit of the " peak rate method " of NK. By means of this system, we can analyze the fatigue life of the structural members of the 280,000 DWT Double Hull VLCC.
