Genetic structure of Tridacna maxima (Roding, 1798) was examined by using isozyme electrophoresis techniques. Among 4 studied populations - Peng-Hu , Lu-Tao, Lan-Yu and Ken-Ting, it was found that mean number of alleles per locus was high (Na = 3.1~3.4).
Overall survey, high levels of variabilities were detected within each population (P95 = 87.5﹪, HE = 0.444~0.505).
Genetic data revealed that populations of Tridacna maxima differed significantly among four regions (D = 0.084~0.139, FST = 0.028, P<0.001), and subdivision of populations into west population and east population two geographic groups by UPGMA(Unweight Pair-Group Method Analysis, Sneath and Sokal, 1973)analysis (FST = 0.013, P = 0.002).
The significant subdivision among regions reflect that gene flow may have been restrained by long distance and the flow pattern of ocean current.
