A Tectonic Study on the Luce Chapel at Tunghai University / 東海大學路思義教堂的構築性探討

碩士 / 東海大學 / 建築學系 / 87 / This thesis is focus on the realization process of architecture so as to launch the tectonic study on the Luce Chapel. First, the discussion is from ''Form'' to ''Design'', the modernism thinking which is expressed by the space and structure of the Luce Chapel. Second, discussing from ''Design'' to ''Build'', the local tectonic experiences which is expressed by the craftsman system. And the spatial atmosphere derives form the two themes which relates to every stage of the tectonic process closely. The conoid shell is the core form and the art form of the Luce Chapel. These four enclosed membranes surround the inner space and act as the outer expression. Because of the characteristics of conoid and the opening corners, the Luce Chapel becomes a shelter-like box and a roomed-space. These characteristics also carry out the contrastive space-time ideas.Loaded with the sensuous signatures, the Luce Chapel is related to materiality tightly. After the decision of using reinforced concrete as the major material was made, the grid was then applied to become the actual structural system of the conoid form. The grid divides the internal surfaces of the conoid shell, and demonstrates the opposing of the real materiality and the gravity, thus, the atmosphere of internal space is created. The form is not only an abstract archetype, but is also defined as the specific design. The consideration for externalizing the form was added gradually and this became the crucial tectonic process. It was not carried out by the canonical compositional technique, but was the tuning of handy craftsman. All the trace left by the handy tools provided the remarkable sensuous and aesthetic signatures for the Chapel. The realization of the Chapel accumulated from the different attitudes of the different tectonic phases. The form came from sustained attempts instead of an arbitrary decision. The idea of the form was not only the externalization of theory, but also from the real touch of materiality. The success did not come from the heroism of the leader but from the all participated members, the craftsman, the engineers and the architects. The aesthetic experiences not only came from the consolidated logic but also from the tiny traces left from the craftsmanship. The case of the Luce Chapel revealed the spirits of the craftsmanship and the breakout of the ideas of architectonic in the 1960s of Taiwan.
