The study of far-sea fisheries select financial institutions by fuzzy multiple criterion methods / 遠洋漁業公司選擇金融機構模糊多準則評估之研究

Far-sea Fishery is one of the most important fishing activities in Taiwan. Being an internationalized industry, its fishing activities spread all over the three Oceans and five Continents. Few banks have been providing fishery companies with loans to finance shipping vessels building due to heavy cost concern. And all expense for purchasing necessity and daily supply or income from selling fish goods are operated by telegraphic remitting or Letter of credits via banks because of long distant operating in economical seas and public seas for long period of time. As a result, it is very crucial for far-sea fishing companies to evaluate and choose a qualified banking facility to deal with.
To bankers, far-sea fishery is needless to say, a market worthy exploring. By selecting well-performing companies and undertaking financing business is truly an essential way to gain profits. The existing research papers about far-sea fishery, which have been done by domestic and overseas experts and researchers, mainly emphasize on cost and profit analysis, resources reservation and protection, and related far-sea fishery policies. As for research and analysis on interaction between far-sea fishing companies and banking facilities, it’s still lacking. Therefore, this research paper stands a viewpoint from the far-sea fishing companies, focusing on their understanding and evaluating methods when choosing banks. The research adopts a method of interviewing main far-sea fishing companies located in Kaohsiung area. Based on the valid professional questionnaires collected from interviewing, the main evaluation items and factors are firstly established by using Fuzzy Delphi and then percentage and weighting of different items are calculated by using Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process. Finally, through the evaluation results of banking facilities done by the fishing companies, the banks can get an idea of how to improve service quality, resource management and organization efficiency and thus eventually to promote competitive power.
In short, this research contains the following findings: for far-sea fishing companies, product phase is more important than other phases when evaluating a qualified bank to deal with. As for banking products, whether the bank can provide mortgage loans against fishing vessel as security is firstly concerned; as for service quality, whether the bank listens to the customer’s real needs is the most significant; as for reputation, a bank’s prestige is superior to branch manager’s ethics and integrity; as for pricing, whether the exchange rate is negotiable is more important than reasonable commission charge.
