''''Si-Hai dialect'''' is the mixture of the two main sub-dialects of Taiwan Hakka, Si-Xien dialect and Hai-Lu dialect. The original phonetic forms, words, even syntax of Si-Xien dialect and Hai-Lu dialect have changed after language contact. Thus, Dr. Luo suggests that Si-Hai dialect will be a main stream of Taiwan Hakka dialects.
This study aims directly at various kinds of language phenomena of Si-Hai dialect. We attempted to investigate from the four aspects:
1. The distribution and the language structure of Si-Hai dialect;
2. The forming of Si-Hai dialect;
3. The characteristics of Si-Hai dialect;
4. The rules and tendencies of language change found from Si-Hai dialect.
This thesis is divided into eight chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction, Chapter 2 the literature review. In Chapter 3, Si-Xien and Hai-Lu Hakka are introduced. In Chapters 4, 5,and 6, seventeen types of Si-Hai dialect in six locations-Pin-zhin, Iang-mei, Guan-xi, O-mei, To-fin and Nan-cuang are introduced. In chapter 7, the way of formation of Si-Hai dialect is proposed, and the special language phenomena of Si-Hai dialect described, the condition of language variation of Si-Hai dialect summarized by statistics is discussed.
