Field Measurements and Numerical Simulation of Currents and Tides in the Ksohsiung Harbor / 高雄港港池流場的現場觀測與數值模擬

碩士 / 國立中山大學 / 海洋資源學系 / 88 / Kaohsiung Harbor is one of the most important international sea ports in Asia. Due to the lack of in-situ current data, the complex variation of the flow field and hydrodynamic properties in this basin still remain unclear. As a consequence, the related environmental problems such as oil spills, water quality management and ship maneuvering safety in the harbor have not been solved. The present study is conducted to better understand the flow field in the Kaohsiung Harbor.
The flow dynamics and their driving mechanisms of this basin are investigated using numerical modelling and field measurements of current profile, water level, water temperature and salinity at both entrances conducted during July and August of 1999. A two-dimensional, finite element model with tidal forcing was developed to calculate the current speed and direction. Analysis of the water elevation series indicates that the tides in both entrances are similar, mostly mixed, mainly semidiurnal with a men tidal range of 0.78m. Tidal currents in and off the basin are also of the mixed type, but are more semidiurnal than tides. Tidal phase differences between the two inlets are small. In the first and second inlets, the peak currents measure 0.6 m/s and 0.53 m/s, respectively; currents at 8m beneath the sea surface have maximum speeds and show a more significant tidal pattern. The marine waters on the average appear to enter the basin through the first inlet and exit the system through the second inlet on the flood, and vice versa. Excess precipitation with large river runoff into the basin during the measurement period results in a surface flow of less saline water exiting both inlets. Under these circumstances, flows in both inlets appear to exit the basin simultaneously more frequently than entering, especially on the flood. Model results suggest a smaller tide-generating flow in this basin compared with the in situ measurements.
