碩士 / 國立海洋大學 / 漁業科學學系 / 88 / Reproductive biology of the big eye, Priacanthus macracanthus in the northeastern waters off Taiwan was examined in this study. The results combined with demographic analysis can provide useful information for resource management. Reproductive period was estimated to be from April to August based on the following four techniques: macroscopic appearance of ovarian stage, histological examination of ovaries, follicular diameter measurements, and gonadosomtic index. Ovary development was divided into four stages based on histological observation, undeveloped stage, developing stage, matured stage, and spent stage. Sex ratio was not significantly different from 0.5 with c2 test. Mean fecundity were 333863 ± 97721 oocytes and mean fertility were 190156 ± 36990.The relationship between fecundity (F) and fork length (FL) was F = 299.54FL2.26 ( r2 = 0.597 ). The relationship between fertility (Fe) and fork length (FL) was Fe = 492.19FL1.93 ( r2 = 0.661 ). Both fecundity and fertility increased with the increase of fork length. Length at first maturity was 18.9cm FL(roughly 3 years old fish) with the relationship between mature percentage and fork length. The results of demographic analysis revealed that the big eye population increased 30.1% per year without fishing mortality and the generation time (G) was estimated to be 4.47 years, the net reproductive value (R0) was 3.24. Net reproductive value, generation time, and intrinsic population growth rate decreased with the increase of fishing mortality. If fishing started at age 3 fishing mortality (F=1.5), the net reproductive value was estimated to be 1.00 and the population was roughly under equilibrium situation. As present fishing mortality, net reproductive was estimated to be 1.333, generation time to be 3.513 years, and population increased 8.47% per year.
