Two length frequency data sets of the moon fish, Mene maculata, from the southwestern waters off Taiwan during 1981 - 1984 and 1995 - 1997 were analyzed with multiple length frequency analysis (MULTIFAN), to estimate age and growth.
The parameters of von Bertalanffy growth equation (VBGE) estimated by MULTIFAN were as follows:
1981-1984: The asymptotic standard length L = 279.8 mm, growth rate K = 0.186/year. Three age classes were separated, and the mean length were 119.3mm, 138.9mm and 162.8mm for age 1 — 3, respectively. The third age class was the dominant one, with the proportions of 54%, the second age class with 24.9%, and the first age class was 21.1%.
1995 — 1997: L = 218.5 mm and K = 0.285/year. Four age classes were separated with the mean length of 111.1 mm, 134.3mm, 155.2mm and 171.0mm for age 1-4, respectively. The proportions of each age was 34.2% for the fourth age class, 24.4% for the second age class, 23.3% for the third age class, and 19.9% for the first age class.
Significant difference on the VBGE estimated from MULTIFAN between the two periods was found with Hotelling’s T2.
Smaller asymptotic length and faster growth rate of the 1995 — 1997 period suggested that there might be a compensation resulted from the increase of fishing effort.
