An application of using VRML method analyse geophysical data in Southernmost Part of Okinawa Trough / 虛擬實境方法在分析南沖繩海槽地球物理資料上的應用

碩士 / 國立海洋大學 / 應用地球物理研究所 / 88 / Using the Virtually Reality Modeling Language (VRML) technique, we can “walk”, “slide”, “examine”, “point”, “view”, and “look” the geophysical data in real-time “flythrough” modes better than the traditional 2-D and 3-D mapping tools. We have firstly grided the detailed bathymetry and earthquake data in the Southernmost Part Of Okinawa Trough (SPOT), and then applied to the “ImageTexture” method to further stack with other geophysical data (e.g., magnetic and gravity data) into a single view. In this attempt, we will be able to observe and compare the data in more details and delineate a better wide-angle view of the data and separate other subtle features and structures which may be important to understand the tectonism of SPOT area. As we add more detail to the techniques, the VRML browser takes longer time to build them, and they will be less interactive. By using the VRML “LOD” (level of detail) method we can control different levels of detail. More methods and tools (e.g., the “WEB” distribution) are now under the experiment to improve the techniques. The SPOT is located in the northeastern corner of Taiwan offshore area, east of the Kueishantao andesite volcanic island. It is an extreme active tectonic region: the earthquakes are frequent, the submarine volcanoes are young and active (a total of 68 identified volcanoes were grouped by the VRML technique), the heat flow are as high, and the dissolved magnesium are more than 100 times greater than that of a normal ocean water. Before we have the opportunity to use the submersible to dive and observe the features directly, we wish to use the VRML methods to simulate the virtually reality of the marine geophysical data.
