RECREATING AND EXTENDING BUYER-SUPPLIER LINKS / 外包商外移模式及其影響因素之研究-台商海外生產網路之實證

碩士 / 國立臺灣大學 / 國際企業學研究所 / 88 / Responding to changing operational environment in their home country, many Taiwanese manufacturers pursue foreign expansion initiatives to sustain their competitive advantages as suppliers to global markets. Regardless of the motives of foreign expansion of these manufacturers, one critical decision faced these manufacturers is to choose either recreating existing supply relationships in their home country or extending a new supply relationship in the host country entered. The present research is to explore this issue from the supplier point of view by investigating 96 Taiwanese manufacturing suppliers pertaining to six production networks operated in three countries (Vietnam, Thailand, and Mainland China).
According to our field survey under which a primary data set was constructed, around 70% of these manufacturers are pertaining to recreating their existing supply relationship with respect to the buyer engaged in Taiwan while the rest are pertaining to extending a new supply relationship with the buyer in host country. Further, we examine several economic and organizational factors under which different types of buyer-supplier links may be influenced. Results show that the presence of supplier entry timing to new location, suppliers'''' motivation to control the raw material, long-term buyer-supplier relationship, the buyer-supplier resource exchange ability, and the overseas production experience of the buyer tend to significantly affect the likelihood of either recreation or extension of buyer-supplier links. Meanwhile, our results indicate that the resource sharing mechanisms that support the formation of long-term collaborative relationships are not well equipped within the Taiwanese production networks operated in these foreign countries. This piece of evidence may reflect the fact that Taiwanese companies perceive flexibility as more important a factor of decision-making than long-term commitments on buyer-supplier link in forming their production network. Practical implications and future research suggestions are also provided.
