A Study of the International Division of Labor of Taiwanese Machine Tool Companies and Their Overseas Subsidiaries / 臺灣工具機企業海外據點國際分工模式之探討

碩士 / 東海大學 / 工業工程學系 / 88 / The machine tool industry has played a critical role Taiwan’s economic development. In recent years, however, the profit margins of local machine tool companies have been squeezed due to rising wages and higher production costs. Therefore, in order to grasp new opportunities and sustain their competitive position, an increasing number of Taiwanese machine tool firms have begun to establish operating subsidiaries overseas.
This investigation tries to explain the relationship between these subsidiaries and their parent factories from the viewpoint of the subsidiaries abroad. In this way, we can help accumulate some of the basic evidence needed for constructing an international division of labor (IDL) model. First, articles related to IDLs are used to help analyze the IDL model between overseas subsidiaries and their parent factories in multinational businesses. This thesis finds three types of coordination: a vertical division of labor, a horizontal division of labor, and horizontal integration. Second, the Chinese subsidiaries of four Taiwanese machine tool enterprises have been chosen as case studies for verifying our analytical perspective.
As far as a vertical division of labor is concerned, we find it is always present in the early stages of the subsidiaries in question due to differences in technologies and wages and that it may become the foundation for a mutually beneficial relationship. On the other hand, having analyzed the operations and production lines of such subsidiaries, we note that a horizontal division of labor and horizontal integration also live within these subsidiaries. In addition, companies seem to be increasingly moving from a horizontal division of labor towards horizontal integration owing to variations in technological conditions and the external environment. These results not only supplement existing work on IDLs and Taiwan’s machine tool industry, but also help to provide a practical understanding of the transformation and international characteristics of Taiwanese industries.
