碩士 / 淡江大學 / 東南亞研究所 / 88 / Singapore is a unique country in the Southeastern Asia. About the natural environment, Singapore is on an excellent location between the Pacific Ocean and India Ocean. The location of Singapore has high value in both economic and strategic aspect. About the human culture, Singapore is the only one country which the majority of people is Chinese. The Chinese play an important role in the political aspect of Singapore.
For the convenient management, United Kingdom separates Chinese and Malaysian. This enlarges the gap between Chinese and Malaysian. The unequal relationship in political and economical situation is the main factor that causes the race conflict between Chinese and Malaysian and influences the relationship between Singapore and Malaysia.
Singapore declared independence from Malaysia in 1965. To avoid the suspicion toward "Chinese Chauvinism" of Malaysia and Indonesia, Singapore doesn''t have diplomatic relationship with China and Taiwan. But Singapore supports P.R.C. to join the United Nation. And this apparently implies that the "one China" policy means P.R.C.
After developing diplomatic relationship with China, Singapore''s policy toward both side of Taiwan Strait apparently inclines toward China. The alienation between Lee Kuan Yew and Lee Teng Hui also alienates the relationship between Taiwan and Singapore. The tension of relationship between China and Taiwan makes the relationship between Taiwan and Singapore face test. Taiwan has to strengthen relationship with Singapore. First of all, Taiwan must have the ability to improve the relationship with China so that the relationship between Taiwan and Singapore can be improved.
