There are two parts in this study: for the first part of this study, the heat transfer performance is tested for three different tube materials of finned-tube air cooler; for the second part of this paper, a real time monitoring system along with interactive computer aided-design software for shell and tube heat exchanger is developed
Finned-tube air cooler part: Three finned-tube air coolers of different tube materials were tested: heat pipe, solid aluminum and hollow copper tubes, respectively. The surrounding temperature was controlled at 24℃ and the heat power input was varied from 60W~100W. Experiment results indicated that the heat transfer performance is as follows: heat pipe > solid aluminum > hollow copper.
Shell and tube heat exchanger part: This software was written by the Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 language and can be run in any personal computer. The software has the following two functions:
(1) Real-time monitoring system-prediction of the performance of a Shell and Tube heat exchanger when the dimensions are given.
(2) Determination of the necessary size of a Shell and Tube heat exchanger when given the required performance.
