The conservation of cetaceans in Taiwan was originated at the Pescadores in 1990. However, the conflict between the fishery loss and cetacean protection keep growing. In order to elucidate the relationship between cetaceans and the fishery on the islands, a total of 53 long-line fishermen, 43 torchlight-net fishermen and 50 driftnet fishermen were interviewed in this study. Questionnaires were prepared and interviewed fishermen monthly at fishing villages or harbors on the islands, from January 2000-May 2001. Among the interviewed fishermen, 12 longline and 5 torchlight-net fishermen were requested to log their working process for 12 months and 1 month respectively. The fishing season was usually stretched out from mid March to November (average 5.9 months) for torchlight-net, extended from August to next April (average 6.2 months) for driftnet, and generally covered whole year for longline. The dolphin-encounter rates were as 98% in torchlight-net, 84% for driftnet and 79% for longline and 77% of torchlight-net’s, 52% of driftnet’s and 61% of longline’s were actually interfered by dolphins. In terms of incidental catch of dolphins; the number of dolphins incidentally killed by driftnet was obvious higher than the other two methods: only one dolphin carcass was tangled in torchlight-net and 18 dolphins were incidentally caught by the longline in the span of fishing but 42 dolphins incidentally caught by driftnet, during 1999-2001, 36 in the first fishing season and 6 in the second. According to the returned log records, the probabilities of dolphin-encounter were significantly higher in the eastern water than the western’s and in spring than the other seasons. This result is consistent with the other cetaceans field survey in southwestern waters of Taiwan.
