Container Shipping Industry started its business in Taiwan from early ''70. Today, Taiwan has a few famous international container shipping companies, such as, Evergreen Line, Yang Ming Line, Wan-Hai and Uniglory shipping corporation.
The industry is a global or regional service industry, it has very fierce competition, hence, shipping companies need to find and adopt proper strategy for their core business. In the meantime, for strengthening their competitive advantage, they also need to look for other opportunities in relative field of shipping business. One of the opportunity is investment in Container Terminal, which has recently become an important investment item in shipping industry on its way of diversification and globalization. This recent development of investment in container terminal causes the motive of this research report.
In this report, strategic groups in container shipping industry have been classified, and their different objectives for investment in container terminal have been summarized and concluded.
The strategies for investment in container terminal have also been studied under the following approaches.
1. The strategies for entering into container terminal investment.
1) Public terminal strategy.
2) Exclusive terminal strategy.
3) Privately owned terminal strategy.
2. The strategies for choosing the location.
1) Existing container terminal strategy.
2) Replacement container terminal strategy.
3) Future potential container terminal strategy.
It is finally concluded in the report that different strategic group applies different strategies for investment in container terminal in shipping industry. The report also reveals the importance of investment in container terminal based on the current development in shipping sector, and it is therefore suggested that the government need to support the industry for more proper investment in that area in order to enhance the competitive strength of Taiwan shipping industry.
