Abstract:
Due to the economic boom in recent years and the introduction of high strength materials, as well as the advanced construction method, a better aesthetic long span bridge — cable supported bridge becomes a trends of building design. Comparing to the traditional form of bridges, the cable-supported bridge has longer span, lighter weight and flexible structural characteristics, therefore, sensitive to the wind loads. The aerodynamic stability becomes a major issue for the design of cable-supported bridges. Vortex shedding is one of the bridge aerodynamic phenomenons that usually occur at low wind speed. Normally, It will not cause immediate structural damage, however, sustained bridge vibration might cause concern to the fatigue damage.
It is known, based on studying the existing literatures, that the geometry shape of bridge deck casts the primary effect on the nature of bridge’s vortex shedding phenomenon. It is the intension of this paper to study the effect of deck shape on the “vortex shedding ─ lock in” phenomenon, the response due to lock-in phenomenon is also investigated. The research work of this project can be categorized into two parts. First, the aerodynamic damping effect during the lock-in phenomenon was studied by identifying two aerodynamic damping parameters through wind tunnel model testing. Then, the dynamic responses of cable-stayed bridges were evaluated. This study indicates that a minor change in the shape of deck geometry can result in significant differences in the bridge’s lock-in responses.
