Abstract:
The reformation and opening up in 1978, brought China to reenter the progress of modernization, consequently, urban culture also emerged and developed prosperously. During this wave of policy reformation, Shanghai has resumed its bustling and flourishing scenes at the beginning of the 20s, to resurge its elegance and grace. Ever since the 90s, Wang An-Yi has observed and shown the shanghai culture in her works, which certainly have some connection with this city development. This dissertation hopes to comb out Wang An-Yi’s Shanghai affection through discussion the description about Shanghai in her novels (1976─1995). On one hand, these novels show her cherishment and care about Shanghai, and on the other hand, discuss about the urban culture realm in Shanghai/China after the revolution and opening up.
Excluding the introduction and conclusion, this dissertation is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 probes into Wang An-Yi’s personal growth, literature experience and creation stage, to put the further discussion on a solid foundation. Actually it is fine to say that Wang’s predestined relationship with literature germinates from her sense of loneliness during her growth experience, which is closely related her feeling as a outsiders of Shanghai and her special family experience. The formation of Shanghai urban culture is an important discussion groundwork for this dissertation. Thus, in Chapter 2, it studies the historical development of Shanghai area, to comb out the difference between the modernized urban status of Shanghai with conventional cities of China.
Chapter 3 discusses the turning point for Wang’s tender feeling about Shanghai
through her knowledge youth experience and the Shanghai affection disclosed in her literature creation. At this stage, Wang still recalled the positive image of Shanghai, which strongly contrast to the later formed Shanghai sadness. During the culture revolution, Wang went to remote villages and was distant from Shanghai with the identity of knowledge youth. Carried the utmost political injury, however, Wang’s Shanghai affection was formed, she treasured everything of Shanghai and its beauty, and finished with her former outsider feeling. After 1978, following the increase of returning time and also the obvious transition of Shanghai urban culture at the end of the 80s, She then paid attention to the real urban strength, further reached another kind of understanding and feeling.
After that, Chapter 3 starts from the change of Shanghai feeling, combined with the influence of the Tian An Men Event on June 4, 1989, to discuss the reasons for Wang’s great change in creation style and techniques. Through the book “Facts Recording and Fabrication”, the causes for Wang to “fabricate” the family fable on the basis of “facts” is analyzed, to further discuss what the urban culture characteristics of Shanghai are. In the “God creation movement” of this time, whether Wang has successfully established the main body existence of her self? It is also a topic this chapter copes with.
The last chapter specially discusses about the book “Long Regret Song”. By the nostalgia theme of post-modernism style, “Long Regret Song” outlines the illusion features of Shanghai urban, among it, the distinguishing characteristics of Shanghai citizen society are also manifest completely, to show the folk spirit of Shanghai society. Wang An-Yi first thought Shanghai is the ideal land for life, then experienced the sadness produced from the negative urban culture of Shanghai, later formed family fable to establish the sense of self existence for curing self’s wound, and all these transitions, were written in the nostalgia form of Shanghai through the “Long Regret Song”. Wang An-Yi bids farewell to the Shanghai in her imagination/memory, and then welcome the Shanghai appreciation of the next phase.
