The Decision-Making Process of Shanghai Communiqué / 美國簽訂上海公報決策過程

碩士 / 淡江大學 / 美國研究所 / 89 / This thesis focuses on the decision-making process of Shanghai Communiqué, and discussing Sino-American Normalization Relation. The main theme of this thesis is that Nixon Administration decided to adjust its China Policy owing to international environment change, and to work with China to fight against the Soviet Union. The thesis contains three essential points:
1. Why were Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger eager to improve the relationship with China?
2. Was there any under-the-table deal between China and the United States before the Shanghai Communiqué?
3. What was Taiwan’s role in the decision-making process of Shanghai Communiqué?
There are six chapters: Chapter One is an introduction; Chapter Two analyzes theories, including international system theory, alliance theory, and decision-making theory; Chapter Three focuses on the era of Nixon Administration, when the United States gradually adjusted its China policy; Chapter Four explores the bargaining of Shanghai Communiqué between the Unites States and China; Chapter Five discusses the impact of Shanghai Communiqué, and its influence to Taiwan, Japan, and the Soviet Union. The last chapter, the conclusion, is the writer’s personal reflections after the research.
