Abstract:
At present, the Vatican is the only sovereign state in Europe which recognizes the government of the Republic of China (ROC). Since 1949, the central issue blocking normal relations between the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Vatican has been that of religious freedom. Beijing wants a Catholic Church totally subservient to the government, as exemplified by “The Patriotic Church of China.” But the Holy See advocates a “Universal Church” not tied or identified with any “State,” and free to propagate its mission of love and service in the world. As of now, the exercise of this freedom by the Catholic Church is recognized by 167 countries, including our country ─ the Republic of China, through the exchange of envoys between the Holy See and the countries involved.
Diplomatic relations between Mainland China and the Vatican collapsed, but both of which tried to re-establish the relations with different motivation and intentions. Renewal of relations, China has repeatedly insisted, depends on the Vatican’s cutting ties with Taiwan and renunciation of “non-interference in internal Chinese affairs under the pretext of religion,” most notably in the appointment of bishops. The Vatican has called the latter condition unacceptable.
If only China were free, there wouldn’t be the conflicts and problems besetting Beijing-Taipei relations and Beijing-Vatican relations. If only China were free, democracy, religious freedom and human dignity are no longer a dream but a reality for the people of Mainland China.
Right now the Chinese people are living in a environment full of uncertainties, both of which should treat each other as equals and begin a dialogue to explore the process of searching for a solutions which is good and also acceptable for the government and people of either side of Taiwan Strait.
In the 21century, it is imperative that all the member of the international society should continue to develop in a peaceful environment. Our earnest prayer, is that “peace and solidarity” be with the Chinese people on both side of the Taiwan strait and all over the world as mankind embarks on the third millennium.
