A Study of Five-Forts in the Southwestern Coast of Taiwan / 臺灣西南沿海地區的「五營」研究

碩士 / 國立雲林科技大學 / 空間設計系碩士班 / 89 / Taiwanese traditional settlements carry full connotations of culture that have been stacked by those people living there for a long time. The five-forts are used for defining the boundary of a human settlement and also reflect human’s cosmology and environmental concepts. Even so, there is few research related to this subject so far. This research focuses on the topics of five-forts; namely, the forms, settings, ritual events, and changes of the five-forts, and intends to understand the relations of the five-forts’ settings and their implicit deep meanings.
According to the preliminary studies, the settings of five-forts are strongly related to the development of southwestern coast in Taiwan, and also the five-forts are still existent in the downtown of Tainan where was seaside area in Ching Dynasty and had a special urban network been constructed. Thus, through the field works this research restricts the study area in the southwestern coast of Taiwan, including Chiayi County, Tainan County, and Tainan City. Totally, there are 115 groups of five-forts, 10 ritual events, and 43 interviews with the related persons already investigated.
This thesis is divided into 6 chapters. The first chapter introduces the goal, content, methods and the research area of this research. The second chapter discusses and analyzes the characteristics of each settlement. Chapter three discusses the forms and the changes of the five-forts. The forth chapter focuses on the location, direction, and setting of five-forts in a settlement. Then, chapter five discusses the ritual events of five-forts and the spatial relations through their processes. Finally, the sixth chapter concludes this research and some directions for further research are also provided.
To sum up, the followings are some significant contributions in this research:
1.to stack much more information about five-forts particularly in the southwestern coast of Taiwan;
2.to show the relations of the settings pf five-forts and a human settlement;
3.to understand the spatial concepts of five-forts through the related ritual events;
4.to offer the relations of a settlement and the changes of five-forts through their forms and settings.
