碩士 / 國立中興大學 / 植物學系 / 90 / Periphytonis is one of the most important primary producers in coastal lagoons, but its productivity is generally limited by nutrients. Nutrient limitation of periphyton productivity can be assessed indirectly by measuring the N:P ratio in the water column or in algal tissues, or directly by nutrient enrichment experiments. Tapong Bay is a tropical lagoon and is densely occupied by oyster pen in southwestern Taiwan, surrounding by aquacultural ponds. There is a gradient of nutrient concentration in the water column, with lower concentrations near the inlet and higher concentrations in the inner. The purposes of this study are to examine if the productivity of periphyton is limited by nutrients. The N:P ratio in the water column was less than 16, indicating that nitrogen is relatively deficient to phosphorus. The two-years’ changes of gross community primary production (GCPP) of periphyton were significantly positively correlated with nutrient concentrations in the water column. Nutrient concentrations in the water column declined in late winter and early spring. Nutrient enrichment experiments showed that periphyton productivity may be limited by nitrogen only at this time.
