The “Wokou”as Event, Experience, and Memory / 海商、海盜、倭――明代嘉靖大倭寇的形象

碩士 / 國立暨南國際大學 / 歷史學研究所 / 90 / This research project investigates how Jiajing Wokou was formed in Ming Dynasty as well as explains the reasons why Jiajing Wokou occurred.
Jiajing Wokou took place in the sixteenth century as a great event in Chinese history. Meanwhile, the structure of Chinese society transformed rapidly. As a result, Jiajing Wokou was mythicized by historians especially between the cause and effect of Jiajing Wokou and trading abroad. However, as the case of the fact that Jiangnan, the richest place in resources in China, was not the most thriving venue in terms of trade business from abroad but where Jiajing Wokou exposed at the very start.
Jiajing Wokou happened against all expectations since then. There was a dramatic increase that the maritime businessmen, people who lived along the southeast coast of China, Japanese pirates and even Europeans participated in the Wokou group and committed robberies throughout Jiangnan simply because of the impact of the successful adventure which Xiaoxian had achieved. In fact, the trade network formed after Portuguese came to the East and the smuggling activities were not the major elements which caused Jiajing Wokou. Nevertheless, due to Jiajing Wokou took place beyond expectation, inevitably, there was a scare in Jiangnan afterwards.
Regarding to the event that Toyotomi Hideyosi invaded Korea in 1592, the image of Wokou during the Jiajing period had changed completely. For instance, the members of Wokou group were most Japanese pirates and they seemed to be ignorant, senseless, cruel, and bloodthirsty. Furthermore, it could be said that they achieved the remarkable success of robbery in the southeast coast of China as a result of taking advantage of Chinese leadership. Finally, judging from the contemporary literatures, it has been strongly supported that the image of Wokou was formed by the publishers with certain intentions and objectives instead of a historical investigation and research. Therefore, it is worth considering those issues for historians to explore the true color of what is called Jiajing Wokou.
