"Comparison of personalities and parenting styles for primary school students of single-child family across the straits." / 海峽兩岸小學獨生子女人格特質與父母管教方式的比較

The objective of this research is to explore, under interactive influences of different variables, the parenting styles, personality, and differences in types of parenting for schoolchildren of single-child family across the straights.
The target of research includes school children from 6 primary schools in Taipei, 8 schools in Kaohsiung, and two schools each from Beijin and Shanghai. A total of 1372 schoolchildren in primary 4 and primary 6 single-child families were selected for this study.
The research tools used include “Basic individual information” developed by the author himself, “Parenting style measurement form” prepared by Huang Yu-Chen, and “Life coping measurement form” developed by Professor Wu Hsin-Hua.
Tests in Taiwan were conducted by specialized people, whereas in Mainland China the tests were conducted personally by the author himself while visiting China.
The information gathered in this research after sorting was analyzed using Two Way ANOVA analysis with two major results as shown below:
I. For schoolchildren from single-child family in the four cities across the straights, the parenting style, personality, and parenting types with interactive influences are:
(1) The exists interactions in responsive items of pateral parenting style in different regions and grade numbers. All other factors have no interaction.
(2) There are interactions in social adoption, degree of self-acceptance, and psychological perseverance for personality in different regions and grade numbers.
(3) Parenting types:
1. In the paternal parenting types: In items of affinity, socialization skills, and emotional stability, there are interactions in regions and types of paternal parenting.
2. In the maternal parenting types: In items of affinity, socialization skills, social adoption and feeling of adoption, there are interactions in regions and types of maternal parenting.
From above one can conclude that in the paternal responsive items, the social adoption, degree of self-acceptance, and psychological perseverance for personality there are interactions in affinity, socialization skills, and emotional stability for paternal parenting, whereas for maternal parenting there are interactions in affinity, socialization skills, social adoption and feeling of adoption.
II. Under the variable of different regions, the parenting style, personality, and differences in types of parenting for schoolchildren of single-child family across the straights:
1. There are significant differences in paternal requirement, maternal response, and maternal requirement for parenting styles.
2. The differences reach significant level for personality in affinity, socialization skill, adjustment between study and play, target in life, maturity in behavior, emotional stability, adoption.
3. There are significant differences in personality of social adoption, adjustment between study and play, target in life, maturity in behavior, emotional stability, adoption, self-acceptance for paternal parenting style.
4. There are significant differences in personality of adjustment between study and play, target in life, maturity in behavior, emotional stability, adoption, and self-acceptance for maternal parenting style.
From the findings, this research provides related suggestions for the reference of single-child parents across the straits in different regions as well as future study.
