In this study, the field data from Su-Ao Port during July 2000 and September 2000 are analyzed, and the statistical properties in both ordinary period and typhoon period are discussed separately. In order to distinguish these two periods, several threshold conditions are tested, and found that the spectral wave energy m0 = 0.005 is much suitable. By using such threshold criteria, the wave records are classified and analyzed. In ordinary period and typhoon period, the significant wave periods lie between 7 and 14 or between 9 and 14 seconds, and the significant wave heights are less than 0.2m or more than 0.5m, respectively. Spectral bandwidth in ordinary period is narrow, and is contrary to that in typhoon period. The spectral peak ranges in both periods are similar, but the distributions of wave energy are great different. The wave height distribution inside the harbor is mostly approaching to normal distribution instead of Rayleigh distribution. For the ratio of significant wave height to square root of spectral energy, the average value in ordinary period is 2.6297, and 2.6941 in typhoon period which are all far beyond from the value of 4.004 derived from Rayleigh distribution and the 3.77 suggested by Goda.
