Study on the planning for offshore cage aquaculture in Taiwan / 台灣海域箱網養殖規劃之研究

The objectives of the study were to analyze cage culture in different countries and consider natural environments of cage culture in surrounding ocean. We used GIS techniques to find suitable niche of cage culture in Taiwan. Results of the study were described as following:
(1) Many evidences showed that marine cage culture is a future star on fishery. It is important to have active plan of cage culture on surrounding ocean in Taiwan.
(2) Aquaculture is the fastest developing subject on international economy. The major threat of marine cage culture comes from fish diseases.
(3) The future trends of marine cage culture include offshore, automatic, and large size developments.
(4) The history of cage culture has over twenty years in Taiwan. The production of cage culture is 3,727 tons in 2000 and reach 761,655,000 New Taiwan dollars. The major culturing species is cobia in both Pington and Penghu counties.
(5) The suitable niche decides success of marine cage culture. The direct factors include weather, geographic and biological environments and indirect factors depend on social and economic reasons, and policy and law regulations.
(6) The study found potential development and suitable niche on marine cage culture in Penghu, Pington and Kashong counties.
(7) To reach high economic benefits of cage culture, it is important to select culturing species and suitable sites.
(8) It is important to find a balance between development and environment to plan cage culture.
