Sexual reproduction of three alcyonacean species in southern Taiwan / 台灣南部海域三種軟珊瑚的有性生殖

碩士 / 國立臺灣大學 / 海洋研究所 / 90 / Sexual reproduction of three alcyonacean corals, Lobophytum pauciflorum, Sarcophyton crassocaule, and Sarcophyton trocheliophorum was studied in Nanwan Bay, southern Taiwan from March 2001 to April 2002. Three species are all gonochoric broadcasting spawners with gonads borne in the autozooids. The sex ratio (male : female) of L. pauciflorum and S. crassocaule is 46: 33 and 4: 3, respectively. However, only female was found in S. trocheliophorum. The smallest colony size at sexual maturity of L. pauciflorum and S. trocheliophorum is 51 cm2 and 113 cm2, respectively. The mature oocyte diameter and fecundity of the three species ranges from 300 to 915 μm and from 7.6 to 10.7 oocytes/polyp, respectively. The month of spawning for L. pauciflorum was September, for S. crassocaule was from April to June, and for S. trocheliophorum was from June to August in 2001, respectively. The warmer and smaller range of sea temperatures in Nanwan Bay may provide a longer period during which sea temperature is suitable for successful reproduction of these alcyonacean corals.
