Sodium alginate is traditionally been used as thickening agentin leather dyeing for surface appearance improvement, as it provides artistic and creative colors. One drawback in using sodium alginate is it gives inconsistent brightness and delicacy during processing. In this study,we aimed to find the optimum dyeing conditions by determining optimum sodium alginate concentrations and incubation time during the processing.
Spectrometer was used for measurement. The results showed that higher concentration of sodium alginate resulted higher K/S values; whereas longer incubation time resulted lower K/S values. For the evaluation of lightness and hue on the dyed product with diameter under 3 cm, the lightness and hue of product were found to be consistent under any sodium alginate concentration. However, as diameter increase, lightness and hue values showed greater changes. The effect of different sodium alginate concentration on lightness and hue was red > blue > yellow and yellow > red > blue, respectively. Incubation time showed limited influence on whole color performance. In functional evaluation, 5 % sodium alginate gave optimum clearness, delicacy, exquisiteness, gorgeousness and solid dyeing performance.
And the optimum incubation time after sketching and dyeing was found to be 10 seconds, and longest not over than 60 seconds. This indicated that the effect of concentration of thickening agent on appearance of leather was higher than that of incubation time.
