An Influence Analysis of Choice Set Definition on RandomUtility Models-A Case Study of Major Coastal Wetlands in Taiwan / 選擇集合對隨機效用模型之影響分析-台灣沿海溼地之應用

碩士 / 國立中興大學 / 應用經濟學研究所 / 91 / Random Utility Models require assumptions about the choice sets held by individuals in the sample. If the researcher doesn’t define the choice set appropriately, the parameter estimates and welfare measures may cause mistakes. The main purpose of this research is to examine the effect of the definition for a traveler’s choice set on the parameter and welfare estimated from conditional logit and random parameter logit models.
Three choice set definitions are compared in this study:Full sets, Distanced-Based sets, and Familiarity-Based sets. The evidence shows that parameter estimates will change with the definition of the choice set. Welfare measures for suppose scenarios change from the Familiarity-Based Choice Set methods are always larger than Full sets methods, this implies that the standard practices significantly understate welfare compared to the larger Familiarity-Based set methods.
For the Distanced-Based set method, the experiment was performed to find the parameter would be stable in the 4-hour to 6-hour range at a value that is very close to the value found in the Full set models. A simple correlation analysis was conducted between on way travel time to the site and the familiar sets, the result was found to be :R(TD&Heard)=-0.323 and R(TD&Visited)=-0.340 . Consequently, defining the choice set based on distance may not be a good indicator of the recreation alternatives which the individual considered. We also found that the parameter estimates and welfare measure of CL and RPL using Familiar-Based sets methods are different significantly. The results imply that ignore the I.I.A. and the random heterogeneous preference will understate the compensating variation compared to the RPL models.
