Investigation of Milk Fish(Chanos Chanos) Disease in Tainan Area / 台南地區養殖虱目魚疾病之研究

碩士 / 國立屏東科技大學 / 獸醫學系 / 91 / Abstract
Milkfish culture in Taiwan is an old aquaculture and has been practicing over 400 years. The production quantity of milkfish is estimated approximately 34﹪of the total important aquaculture production in Taiwan. Especially in the recent years the aquaculture environment has become worst, diseases of milkfish tend to evoke more complicated. However, the disease related literatures are scarcely found. Accordingly this study is focused more intensively on the investigation of those diseases occur in milkfish in Tainan area, which represents approximately 81% of total production of milkfish in Taiwan. The serial of systematic disease diagnosis had applied the traditional method plus rapid test kits for microbiological study, gross and histopathology as well as electron microscopical observation were cartied out. Polymerase chain reaction(PCR) also had been applied to access more acculate diagnosis of certain pathogans or diseases.
The data collected for the analysis are partially from the Taiwan City Animal Quarantine Station as well as those of the cases investigated in 1992-2001 period and thereafter till end of 2002, amount of total 436 cases collected in previous and recent years of milkfish disease in Tainan areas. Approximately 59﹪and 57﹪of cases respectively were related to infectious diseases which were including bacterial 15﹪, parasitic 23﹪ and mixed infections 21﹪of several infectious agents. While the other 41﹪and 43﹪of noninfectious diseases respectively which were including poor water quality and death due to freeze, and diseases still is a major problem in the milkfish aquaculture, and thus need a suitable farm management and disease control programs to prevent the economic losses of the milkfish aquaculture. Owing to the milkfish is easily affected and causing mortality by vibriosis and freezing during overwinter months. Besides, the previous records from 1996-1998 had shown that the epizootic outbreak of epitheliocystis during winter season.
But in this latest year (2002) survey, there have no cold snap stroke so far, so there were no epitheliocystis and freezing losses occurred. However, there were two new infectious diseases observed, ie. mycobacteriosis and Streptococcus agalactiae infection. Both of them were cultured and completed the biochemical charaeterization and PCR (polymerase chain reaction) proven. All these two diseases were sporadically spread with low frequency in outbreaks.
