The study of the pirate,Tsai Chien, who invaded Taiwan during the Emperor Chiaching period of the Ching dynasty / 清嘉慶年間海盜蔡牽犯臺之研究

碩士 / 臺南師範學院 / 鄉土文化研究所 / 91 / A pirate is a person, especially in former times, who sailed on the sea and stole from other people’s ships. Emperor Kang Hsi used to say that pirates are like scabies. However, pirates have never vanished. To live on the vast sea, pirates, though being not powerful enough, were still the suffering of the merchants and the people year after year.
The pirates at the Chiaching period of the Ching dynasty were well-organized. Because of the internal turmoil at Annan being much worse, the pirates of Annan have colluded with the ones at the south-eastern coast of China, and it really gave the navy of the Ching dynasty a hard time. Afterwards, Tsai Chien and Chu Fen have risen one after another on the sea, and at last they invaded and influenced Taiwan.
The invasion to Taiwan of Tsai Chien could be divided into two periods: the disturbing period and the covetous period. Instead of indefinite robbing, Tsai Chien put all his sea war force outside the Luerhmen where led to the siege of the navy of the Ching dynasty. Finally, Tsai lost the battle and escaped. However, the invasion, which was the forerunner before the strong Western force invading Taiwan, changed the view of the Ching government that the chaos in Taiwan was “caused by civil disturbances”.
After Tsai Chien’s losing the battle, the armed forces of the Ching government were aimed at him. Also, the government employed the strategy, which had a fatal hit on Tsai Chien, to call for surrender by disunion, and cut off Tsai Chien’s supplies, especially the supply of gunpowder. Owing to the surrender of the Phoenix gang at the Chechiang province and the death of Chu Fen, the Ching government combined together the navy forces of the Fuchien and the Chechiang provinces. Finally, they defeated Tsai Chien at the black ocean in August of the 14th year of Chiaching. Tsai Chien committed suicide by sinking his own ship and was drown to death.
The battle that Tsai Chien invaded Taiwan has had tremendous impact on Taiwan, including economy, politics and military, social culture, etc. For example: the San Chia’s auxiliary defending Tainan, the implementation of the specific shipment of Taiwan’s rice, the construction of the cities, the naturalization of Kemalan, the adjustment of the military measures, the expenditure of the social cost, the class struggle and fighting between Chang Chou and Chuan Chou, the proverbs and legends among the ordinary people, etc.
