Performance-based earthquake resistant capacity assessment of pile wharves / 棧橋式碼頭之耐震性能評估

Taiwan locates at the Pacific Ocean Rim where earthquake occurred frequently. When an earthquake takes place, whether the harbor can function normally depends on the seismic capacity of wharf structure. There are various kinds of wharves in Taiwan; some old wharves were designed with the old seismic resistant design codes. The seismic capacity of these old wharves may not be enough according to the modern codes. However, it is difficult and inefficient to strengthen the structures one by one. Therefore, it is very important to establish a standard method to evaluate the seismic capacity of wharves structure efficiently.
In this study, we evaluate the seismic resistant strength of pile wharf using the capacity spectrum method that was developed by ATC-40. Based on the interaction of wharf structure with soil and water, we use SAP2000 program to perform pushover analysis and establishes capacity curve of the wharf. Following, we take different level of seismic demands to determine the performance points, and then evaluate whether the pile wharf structure meet the selected performance objectives. In addition, the study which uses capacity spectrum to evaluate the seismic resistant strength of the pile wharf may be helpful for development of performance-based design of wharves in Taiwan in the future.
