An Economic Study on the Management of National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium / 國立海洋生物博物館經濟管理之經濟研究

碩士 / 國立海洋大學 / 應用經濟研究所 / 91 / In this study, we use the travel cost method (TCM) to estimate the economic benefits of the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium. The data used were obtained from a questionnaire survey of 250 visitors of the Museum conducted during weekends and weekdays in 2003. Our survey shows that visitors of the Museum are primarily public employees and students between the age of 20 and 35. Most visitors come from the Southern part of Taiwan, and stay for only one day. The main reasons of the visiting the Museum are for enjoying the natural scenery, family travel and educational trips. In terms of satisfaction index, it was computed to be 3.22 and 3.32 for visitors during the weekend and the weekdays, respectively, about the environment. The satisfaction indices on the content of exhibition are 3.27 and 3.38 for visitors during the weekend and the weekdays, respectively. The degree of satisfaction is higher for visitors during the weekdays than the weekend. The average transportation cost of the visitors is NT$522 per person, the average expenditure at the site is NT$1,128. Most visitors were pleased with the visits and expressed their willingness to revisit the Museum. In addition, using TCM, our empirical result shows that the recreational benefit per person is NT$1,859.89 per trip. In 2002, there were 2,339,185 visitors of the Museum. If we use this figure to estimate the total benefits of the Museum, the amount would be $NT4.35 billions. Finally, we used the above-noted results to make some suggestions for the development direction, planning and management of the Museum in the future.
