CHEMTAX Application and Phytoplankton Assessment in the Taiwan Adjacent Sea on Spring Season / 台灣附近海域浮游植物之化學分類暨群落分佈

碩士 / 國立海洋大學 / 生物科技研究所 / 91 / The CHEMTAX(Chemical Taxonomy)program is developed by Mackey et al. (1996), it can be used to calculate algal class abundances from measurement of pigments determined by HPLC based on suggested pigment / CHLa ratios.
In this study, we combined CHEMTAX program and the pigment analysis method published by Joint Global Ocean Fluxes Study (JGOFS, 1994). Three unialgal pigment extracts (Thalassiosira weissflogii clone vic, Tetraselmis chui clone TA and Synechococcus bacillaris clone CCMP 1333) were analyzed to establish the initial pigment ratios of diatoms, chlorophytes and cyanobacteria used in CHEMTAX. This method was also applied to estimate the contribution to total chlorophyll a in the Taiwan adjacent Sea during spring of 2002.
The results of algal culture pigment extracts analysis showed the FUC/CHLa ratio of diatoms was 0.293±0.015, the LUT/CHLa, ZEA /CHLa and CHLb/CHLa ratios of chlorophytes were 0.153±0.015, 0.040±0.007 and 0.524±0.067, respectively. The ZEA/CHLa ratio of cyanobacteria was 0.650±0.041.
The field sample analysis result showed the contributions of individual phytoplankton taxa to total CHLa in the Taiwan Strait surface water (2m depth) were 20.91±16.81%(Bac), 4.83±3.40%(Dino), 6.45±2.73% (Chry), 6.96±2.39%(Prym), 7.52±7.72%(Cryp), 17.32±9.21%(Chl), 6.62±7.10%(Pra), 16.45±18.34%(Cya) and 12.92±12.81%(Proch). Meantime, the oligotrophic region of northern and southern strait were contributed mainly by cyanobacteria, central strait was contributed mainly by prochlorophytes. The contributions of individual phytoplankton taxa to total CHLa in the Taiwan eastern Kuroshio water (2m depth) were 3.57±2.62%(Bac), 2.80±0.94%(Dino), 8.54±3.58%(Chry), 7.68±2.59%(Prym), 1.70±1.22%(Cryp), 24.75±7.18%(Chl), 9.41±9.31%(Pra), 41.08±9.83%(Cya) and 0.47±1.55%(Proch),main contributor were cyanobacteria and chlorophytes. In the future, if we can establish the typical algae pigment ratios data of this region, the result of CHEMTAX calculation will be more representative.
