In this study the variations of nutrients in the Danshuei River Estuary were observed in two ways: by measuring along the main stream of the river, and by monitoring at a fixed location near Kuando Bridge. In the six cruises, ten parameters were compared, including temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, phosphate and silicate. Results from both types of measurements show similar characteristics against salinity or silicate. Significant removal were found for dissolved oxygen, phosphate and ammonia, especially in the salinity range between 10-25 psu. Bacterial organisms were suspected to play the key role controlling the nutrient dynamics in the tidal area, and it has been proved by a cultivation experiments. Drastic conversion from ammonia to nitrite (dN/dt= -70uM/day) has been observed eleven days after the sample collection under controlled illumination. During sunshine environment, ammonia came into the most visible changed amount (dN/dt=-286uM/day) on the forth day; however, it was absorbed by algae but did not become to nitrite.
