World Travel & Tourism Council (as cited in Tourism Bureau, 2002)forecasted the tourism industry would create almost 600 millions job opportunities before 2010.
With the enormous economic effect as the stimulator, many countries, both developing and developed, are devoted to educate the qualified personnel to meet the demanding needs in order to gain the benefits. Taiwan and Mainland China has acknowledged that tourism higher education is crucial to the competitiveness of tourism industry.
The growth of tourism industry of both Taiwan and China was to meet the tourists’ needs. Tourism industry of Taiwan’s grew 1950s.The first college which offered tourism course was founded in 1965, and then graduate school was installed since 1989.
And Mainland China''s tourism industry has experienced incredibly rapid growth and was in urgent need of quality personnel since 1978. The first tourism college was also installed in 1978. There were 407 tourism higher colleges by the end of 2002(China Travel Bureau, 2003).
Mainland will host Olympic Game in 2008, World Fair in 2010. And tourism industry has become Taiwan’s strategy industry since 2000. Both sides are facing the challenge of demand of qualified tourism industry employees
With the different system of polity, economy and education, both sides have different tourism higher education system and development. This study uses comparative education to find out the difference of tourism higher colleges of both sides, and then offers some suggestions to improve Taiwan‘s tourism higher education.
