In the development of the Cross-Strait interactions, the United States has playing the very important role. From the civil war between KMT and CCP till nowadays, the positions and attitudes taken by the United States toward the two regimes staring at each other across the Strait undoubtedly has influencing many crucial domestic political developments of Taiwan. The normalization of US-China relation was started by The Nixon administration; in following this policy, the Carter administration pushed forward in establishing formal diplomatic relation with the People Republic of China. On the other hand, in despite of the vigorous objections raised by China, the United States keeps offering certain degree of military assistances as well as promises for the security of Taiwan which certainly contributes much to the stability of current political as well as economic situation of Taiwan. What is worth to notice is that the interpretation of the sovereignty of Republic of China varies in corresponding to the structural adjustments of the US-China-Taiwan triangular relationship. Such variation sometimes represented by the political declarations; and also revealed the changes of the cross-strait interactions as well as the domestic political system of Taiwan.
The main research theme of this dissertation is to present an explanation to the variation of the interpretations of Taiwanese sovereignty within the scope of the leadership factors, status of the domestic political system, and the contests of domestic political forces from 1949 to the beginning of the post cold war era. The concept of “the Second Image Reversed” is also applied by this dissertation in helping to understand the supports from the Unite States to Taiwan during each stages signified by the changes of US’s strategic emphasis. And based upon the above understanding, this dissertation discusses further about the adjustments made by Taiwanese regime to the position of sovereign interpretations in corresponding to the changes of the triangular relationship.
In sum, the purpose of this dissertation is to understanding the domestic political consequences of international environmental changes by analyzing the adjustment of domestic political structure and the interactions of domestic political forces caused by the sense of insecurity induced by Taiwan during such structural changes.
