碩士 / 國防大學中正理工學院 / 應用物理研究所 / 92 / This research uses MSM (mesoscale spectral model), which is developed by NCEP, to simulate 4 cases, between 2001 and 2003. By comparing wind speed and sea-level-pressure of MSM outputs with CWB weather station observed data, MSM performance is well.
CWB weather station Pengchiayu (46695) is located on an islet over Taiwan northern coastal water. We use Pengchiayu (46695) wind direction as an index. There is strong wind (≥11m/s) over Taiwan Strait and Taiwan eastern offshore, when the Pengchiayu station (46695) is northerly wind. If the Pengchiayu station (46695) is northwesterly or northeasterly wind, the wind over Taiwan Strait and Taiwan eastern offshore is weaker.
From the MSM outputs wind profile, over Taiwan Strait, we can find out the strong wind core near the pressure level of 925hPa. So, we can call it “Low Level Strong Wind”.
In fact, “channel effect” is “barrier effect”. The stream passes through Taiwan Strait, which is blocked by Fujian Province topography and Taiwan Central Mountain Range, change local pressure gradient to trigger gale or enhance wind speed. Barrier effects, not only enhance the wind speed over Taiwan Strait, but also trigger gale over Taiwan eastern offshore.
By cases study, when cPk (continental polar air masses) moves close to 120°E, it can trigger strong wind over Taiwan Strait and Taiwan eastern offshore. So, we must know the prevailing wind direction to get the impinging angle and cPk position for forecasting the gale location over Taiwan coastal water.
