碩士 / 長榮大學 / 經營管理研究所 / 92 / In recent years, owing to the motivation of growth and search for competitiveness based on host countries’ location advantages, many firms accelerate their speed of internationalization and hence transferring their value chain activities to the foreign countries. Therefore, how to set up the value chain activities and manage supply chain system become an important issue for the multinational corporation
(MNC) to be successful in the global market.
The aim of this research is to explore the effect of subsidiary’s role on its supply chain characteristics. Based on the literature of the migration of production networks, resource linkages, resource dependence and partner’s relationship characteristics, a framework is proposed to examine the effect of subsidiary’s role on its supply chain characteristics. The supply chain characteristics are composed of recreation of relationship with home country’s suppliers, whether the supplier is a joint venture partner, the level of resource interdependence and the comprehensiveness of resource linkages, the long term orientation and formalization of the supplier-buyer relationship.
Using a questionnaire to collect the data, this research uses ANCOVA, logistic regression and multiple-regression to analyze 57 Taiwanese manufacturing firms’ foreign subsidiaries. The result shows that the subsidiary’s role has influence on whether the local supplier is a joint venture partner, the level of resource interdependence, the comprehensiveness of resource linkages and long term orientation of the supplier-buyer relationship. However, the recreation of relationship with country’s suppliers and formalization of the supplier-buyer relationship do not attain the significant level.
This result implies that the autonomous subsidiary belongs to the ‘local—rooted type’ firm. It is profit-oriented and hence its relationship with local supplier is to gain any profit from the suppliers. The receptive subsidiary is the ‘search for advantage’ type firm and hence its relationship with local supplier is to achieve the headquarters’ objectives. The active subsidiary is a ‘mandate’ type firm and hence its relationship with local supplier is to fully utilize the location advantage to enhance the MNC competitive advantage.
Key words:multinational corporation, subsidiary role, supply chain system, resource linkage and partner characteristic
