The categories of weapon and equipment on the warship are numerous. The console has different shapes to meet the operation of the weapon-equipment. Many consoles are like the VDT (Visual Display Terminals) in the general workplace. The main difference is in the operation environment. Although most parts of the warship console meet the anthropometric requirement, the operator may still feel uncomfortable to operate the console due to bad operation environment.
The descriptive analysis of the current warship console in contrast with the VDT of the general workplace is first presented, including the operator response to the console size and the human factor considerations. A conceptual design of the warship console was then developed. This work tries to evaluate the present warship console compared with the new console design with questionnaires.
The questionnaire result shows that the present console has much to improve. The interviewees have uncomfortable experiences in using the present console. Most interviewees express high expectation to improve the hardware design. The new warship console design receives good responses. However, they are not sure whether the new design can improve the space based on the visual presentation of the design.
This new warship console design takes into consideration the actual opinion of the operator and the ergonomic principles. It is hoped that the proposal of new design concepts can be used to enhance the performance of the warship weapon system and avoid possible physical injury on the operator.
