A Content Analysis of the Composition Titles in University Entrance Exams: Taiwan vs. China / 臺海兩岸大學入學考試國文科作文試題之比較研究

碩士 / 國立暨南國際大學 / 比較教育學系 / 93 / The study focuses on the change of Chinese composition titles in university entrance exams between Taiwan and R.P.C. in the last fifty years, the former ranges from 1954 to 2004, and the latter from 1952 to 1965 and 1977 to 2004. The main purposes of this study are to examine: the tendency and change of Chinese composition titles over time in college entrance exams, the characteristics of the essay titles, the features of writing rules, and the possible correlation between the composition exams and the college students selection criteria.
The research methods used in this study include: document analysis, comparative study, and interview survey. The result findings are as follows:
A. The Chinese composition title changes over time:
The main style of the Chinese compositions have changed from “titles giving orientation” to “clues giving orientation.” Besides, these changes are found to be different in both societies but have something to do with Taiwanese and Chinese social development.
B. The characteristics of the composition titles:
The former development of the composition titles between Taiwan and Mainland China are both influenced by their political philosophy. And the later stages are based on the attempt of combing students’ life experiences and social knowledge. This tendency corresponds to the social development from close-to open-minded orientation. There are of great meanings to exam the title changes over time.
C. The features of writing rules:
Same features are found of both sides of the Taiwan Strait including: exam grading criteria, standardizing the amending devices, cancelling limit of the genres of composition, and the pluralizing of writing styles. Moreover, Taiwan and China will still face many challenges in the future regarding their writing rules of compositions.
D. The background factors in deciding titles:
The changes of composition titles between Taiwan and China are both influenced by social development, heritage of the imperial examination system, and the reform of the college entrance exams.
E. The talent-selection criteria in universities between Taiwan and China:
It is found that there is a possible correlation between the talent-selection criteria of the universities and the composition exams which evolved from general- to specialized- abilities corresponding to the needs of current social development.
In the end, suggestions are made for both Taiwan and China to reform their Chinese essay title giving in the university entrance exam.
