Place attachment contains two subdimensions: functional dependence and emotional connection. This research attempted to understand place attachment of the tourists and the local residents, and to identify factors that distinguish different level of intensity of place attachment.
This study constructed the questionnaire based on previous researches. Data from Liyu Lake show stronger place attachment of the tourist to be associated with gender, residence registration. Place attachment of the tourist is also associated with the duration of visit, frequency of visitation, and the ways of travel. The results also shows stronger place attachment of local residents to be associated with gender, education, occupation. Place attachment of the local residents is also associated with the duration of residency.
The intensify of place attachment vary among different types of users. Four types of travelers are identified: the pilgrim, the hobo, the idle" and the tourist". Four types of resident are identied: "the daily life", "the emotion approval", "sparsely leaving" and "the vital function". Identifying the intensity of place attachment among different users enables a better understanding of tourism and local development.
