This essay is to investigate the cultural changes regarding the constructions and ceremonies of the Big-Boat for two thousand years on Orchid Island. It focuses on the Big-Boat culture of Yami people and tries to realize and interpret how various events have influenced each other, such as myths, rituals, habits, social practices, politicking, economics, foreign religions and educations et al.
Traditionally, these boats were built not only for fishing nor religious purposes, but also for social systems, social regensis and specifically esthetic appreciation. The Big-Boat culture of Yami is based on a central value of social regenesis. That’s to go through teknonymy of generate, goods and materials production and accumulate local knowledge to supply individual for social service. On the other hand, society provides domains, habits, tabooed systems, rituals and myths for individual to extend power and to elevate status. At the same time, society provides service for existences and generations to come.
The current culture of Big-Boat had different dimensions in every tribe of Orchid Island. There are the cultivation on timberlands, the building of Big-Boats, the inauguration of ceremonies, the competition of ritual rights, the occurrence of small boat in the flying fish ritual, the popular culture of Big-boats brought into museum collection or markets and introduction of motor boat for material production.
When traditional culture meets with foreign cultures. The central value was withdrawed by characters, calendars, Christianity, coin, tobacco, alcohol, and new tools. The social structure is transforming with failed marriages, lost names, aberrance practices, and falling out of spirits. The social practice is involved and interpenetrated every dimension of sacredness/custom, normal/aberrance, habit/initiate, display/concealment, enrollment/suburb, and state/equal.
Convolution is a form of dynamic changing. The Big-boat cultural deformation, swinging, spin, evolution, involution and revolution, those are based on existence and generation, that toward future and modernization by different strength. The change form one is to keep order and apply traditional context to repairing social structure and to solving new problems, another is to try removing current social structure and create a new social state.
At present, elder people still posses the local knowledge, traditional values, myths, rituals and produce the martial by requiring safety and honesty for tradition’s sake. Other people maintain traditional role of themselves to do their best. Although with the new workforce coming in, they still are living according to the traditional social values as the core of practice.
