Research on Cost-Reduction Models Applied to Global Production and Logistic Operations for Motorcycle Manufacturers in Taiwan / 我國機車廠全球生產運籌降低成本之模式探討

碩士 / 國立高雄第一科技大學 / 運輸倉儲營運所 / 92 / Given the nearly saturated domestic motorcycle market, in order to maintain an upward corporate growth, all major manufacturers have been investing consistently in R&D to improve product designs and strengthen product quality. Concurrently, they are thriving aggressively in developing new sales in overseas countries. Therefore, how to successfully compete and survive in the global market has become a crucial issue for domestic motorcycle manufacturers. The issue involves important subjects such as providing a variety of products with designs that can satisfy various tastes in different regions; and how to produce products through coordinating with global supply chains and available resources to sustain in the vigorous price competitions and still retain the desired profit margin.

This study focuses on helping domestic motorcycle manufacturers find methods in reducing both operation and production costs and develop strategies to effectively and efficiently utilize global resources in manufacturing their products. This study will develop an optimized operation and production model and suggest strategies for domestic motorcycle manufacturer to fulfill customer satisfaction and improve corporate profitability. The study coverage is based on a motorcycle assembly plant in Taiwan, first stretches upward to four upstream component suppliers in China, and second to the four midstream assembly plants in Taiwan, China, and Indonesia, then last to the downstream regional sales points in Europe, Central America, Southeast Asia, and Africa. This study concludes an optimized operation and production model by simplifying all components into 5 modules and implementing operational research approach to consolidate component purchasing cost, component transportation cost, production cost, and finish good transportation cost.

The research result indicates that an appropriate production model can help increase additional product value and improve profit margin. However, the corporate operating direction could be misled when evaluating the outcome solely based on the cost accounting point of view. Therefore, a domestic motorcycle manufacturer should objectively and carefully evaluate all its available resources and possible limitations when choosing an appropriate operation model that can best benefit the overall corporate operation.

The study discussed several operational research approaches that have never been implemented in the motorcycle industry, added various limitations, and evaluated ways to minimize production costs in searching and integrating available resources in domestic and overseas then to conclude a model that helps decision maker quickly and correctly select the best operation and production strategy. The spirit of the study is to prove that there is a way to find the best production and operation model for a specific motorcycle manufacturer but not to solve and find the best solution in a mathematical model. At the end, the study constructs several models that lead to different conclusions derived from real world results made by the decision maker following the logical decision making processes when under different situations.
