Abstract
This is a story of an old fisherman. The researcher’s goal is to introduce the life experiences of Mr. Hong Chuan, an old fisherman, and tries to record his career transition and accommodation to life. Meanwhile, from the micro-viewpoint of career development and transition, the study is to review his life history and understand the important factors that influenced his career. The researcher expects to respond to the shouts from vagrant fishermen and experience the life of the disadvantaged minority that has little recorded in history.
“No more Halieutics —The career change of a veteran captain” is the theme of the study. It explains his struggle to give up his traditional role; the positive and negative psychological factors as well as the physiological and social one that influenced him to make this extremely hard decision. His life journey is linked with successful or unsuccessful accommodation. The qualitative study method is used in the study; from explaining his viewpoint to studying the life of this old captain based on his life story. This research is conducted mainly by in-depth interviewing. Literature and related documents are just a supportive source for information gathering. The transition and accommodation to life of a fisherman in our time can be seen from his personal description.
Chapter Four is the life story of the old captain. “No more the sea”, is a personal career change, as well as a reflection of ups and downs in fishing history during the Japanese governing period up to date. As the main body of this thesis, his life story is told in a chronicle order with significant figures and events introduced one by one. By telling the story from the third person point of view, it allows the readers to “live” his life and experience what he has experienced.
Chapter five analyzes and discusses the story of the old captain. The study found that his life was all about choices made between self actualization and commitment for his family in the context of personal family background and the situation during that particular period of time. To sum up, self actualization and family are indeed the backbone of his life story. By examining the influential factors on the fisherman’s growth, personality, and career transition, it is clear that his nature and the significant others and events encountered during his life journey do play a key role in forming his career transition and takes on ups and downs in life. The aforementioned factors should not be seen as an isolated cause-effect, but rather, it is a comprehensive result of their interactions with social variance.
Chapter six talks about how the researcher sees herself during the research process. By going through the fisherman’s life journey, the researcher has a chance to relate herself to the interviewee in the hope of revitalizing her own life. Last but not least, this researcher aims at drawing attention to fishermen career development from adult educators and all related professionals.
