Evaluation of Faucet Aerator and Laminar Flow Device Causes Increasing Waterborne Microorganism Contamination / 探討水龍頭省水裝置與增加水生微生物污染的關係

碩士 / 國立高雄師範大學 / 環境教育研究所 / 92 / Water is one of our most vital and valuable natural resources. Water is precious and should not be wasted. It is the basis of life and its abundance or scarcity determines our quality of life. If we want the water resources to be continuously available for everyone, we must begin conserving the water now.
Record-breaking drought occurs more often than ever. In Taiwan, the shortage of water has become a common event in recent years. However, the government plan to develop water resource such as dam and reservoirs was protested or even stopped by the public because of environmental concern.
Recognizing an ongoing need for the water conservation, it would be easier to do by requiring a small change in one’s daily habits. Aerators is a small screens fitted to the end of faucet. Mixing air with water restricts flow. The water flow looks and feels full-force, but less water is being used. An aerator will save one-half gallon of water daily.
However, the idea of installing faucet aerators and laminar flow devices are not recommended by infection control societies. Literatures suggested the bacteria isolated from the patient are identical to that from the faucet aerator. And theoretically, aerator screens obstruct the waste flow, which may provide an un-disturbed environment to bacteria to amplify.
Government encourages the people to conserve water usage because of the water shortage over the years. In healthcare facilities, installing such water faucet may cause nosocomial infections. Therefore, the hospitals are facing a paradox between water conservation and patient health.
. Understanding the mode of transmission and the source of infection in healthcare facilities, we could further prevent and control the infection within the hospital. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that installing water reservoirs does not increase the micro organism in water by evidence- base medical research. The result of our study suggests that installing water reservoirs is does not increase the risk of colonization of studied pathogens
